My apologies, Joe. Obviously I "should" have said that I have not known
of any Latin or ancient Greek being offered. Regardless, I am happy to
hear that there are areas where they are still available so that our
civilization can keep in touch with it's origins, dirty poetry and all.
Of course, it would be even better if we learned from our history but
that is another topic, lol! Yasmine

Well, I would hope that in Italy (and Greece), you would be studying
your own languages' origins just like we in the English speaking world
can study middle and old English. I wonder if the study of the older
versions of the language is any more popular in Italy or Greece as it is
N. America at any rate, lol! Yasmine

Of the different types of secondary schools in Italy, theliceo is the one w=
hich aims to shape the individual, pass on theoretical rather than applied =
knowledge, and develop the capacities of free judgement and criticism. This=
reaches its full expression in the most traditional of thelicei, theliceo =
classico, which focuses on the study of classical languages (Latin and Gree=
k). In the more recently introducedliceo scientifico there is an emphasis o=
n mathematics and science as well as Latin and philosophy, which are charac=
teristic of the education in other types ofliceo (linguistic, artistic, etc=
) too.=0AThat being said, if you choose that kind of high school, you will =
study latin and greeks for five years. Then (but only in the university) yo=
u can study the "old italian", that, for us, means either the different lan=
guages spoken in the various part of Italy (dante's florentin, sicilian, fr=
ench-piedmontese etc.) or the "old italian" (the common/quite modern=A0lang=
uage born after the unification of Italy - 1871 - that is essentially flore=
ntin). The man who had the credit of being considered the father of modern =
italian language is Alessandro Manzoni. Older version of italian are absolu=
tely no more=A0in use, but dialects are speaked a lot everywhere.=0A=A0=0AG=
