Joe Brennan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2005 21:40:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Liu Subject: Barry's influence on songwriting. Barry's influence stems from the guitar tuning he uses. It also is marked by the almost absence of the "V" chord which is usually prevalant in popular music styles and appears in 75% of the songs in other writers of music as the last chord in the chorus, bridge, or verse. The songs that are built upon Barry's tuning usually lack this trademark expected in the pop music genre. Further found in many of the songs built upon Barry's tuning is an usual modulation that is found in "How Deep Is Your Love" (HDIYL for you Gibb Geeks) when "softly leave" is sung. I may be overgenrallizing here as I'm no music expert - but if you want to constrast the styles - look at Now Voyager vs. How Old Are You. Robib's album uses more conventional chord progressions whereas Barry's album takes the tunings and mudulations one step further than usually found on other Bee Gees Albums of that period. Barry's sound is more characterized by "How To Fall In Love Part 1" and "For Whom The Bell Tolls". That's my favorite album so I'm going to use it as a benchmark. If the songwriting on Guilty Part Deux uses Barry's guitar tuning as a skeleton, then it will sound a lot like Barry's Songs - it can't help but sound like that. Bread's "Make It With You" also uses this tuning. So Does "I Can Bring Love". Bread's song uses the "V" chord whereas the other songs I have mentioned have it sparsly used or in the case of HTFILP1 (I got tired of typing the long asssed title and used the abbreviation), does not have the "V" chord explicitly used, but only implicitly implied by the bass line. Joe Brennan True, but weren't the first five songs offered to Streisand the Barry & Robin compositions? If I recall correctly they were the songs that sold her on Barry's (and Robin's) songwriting and the Barry/Albhy songs came later. Also, and you are better aware than I Joe, Albhy was a musician with about 5 years under his belt working with Barry and the Bee Gees, and others I believe. Who is to say Ashley has the same ability? He may, but Albhy did much more at that stage than Ashley has done to this point. So, it's a little different IMO. But once again, let's see what the kid's got. Perhaps his old man has taught him well.
