Sal Date: Wed, 21 May 2014 12:06:55 -0400 From: Kevin McManus <mcmanus.kevin@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Review of the Philly Concert As one who is too prone to rise to the bait, I can report to Doug that, unless Barry's appearance on The Tonight Show spurs potential concert-goers into a frenzy of ticket-buying, there will be plenty of opportunity to bring people down from higher levels of the Jones Beach Theater to fill some of the empty spaces below. Indeed, given the chilly temperatures and scattered showers being forecast for Friday night, we might want to huddle for warmth. I hope our visitors from South Florida remembered to pack their fleece. Mind you, it's a good-sized venue (15,000 seats, 3,800 of them on the upper level), and the "in-between" priced seats have sold reasonably well. Orchestra seats have been reduced in price by $15 to $35, but the most expensive seats still cost over $100 more than the top-of-the-line seats in Boston and Philadelphia. Someone claiming to be the wife of someone claiming to be David Garcia does not appear to have succeeded in selling blocks of tickets to senior citizen tour groups from abroad. Or perhaps that never really happened. The next step might be to try to snag some of the many sailors who are in town starting today for Fleet Week. Surely many of them will be looking to have a good time while in port. Having said all of this, I should add that I'm looking forward to the concert with great anticipation and don't really care how many people are there. In fact, fewer might be better, since the parking lot only has one or at most two exits, which can apparently lead to significant post-concert traffic jams ... I did. It was a very good concert. I enjoyed it. Barry was in fine form. Yes, he's older and seemed to tire a little at the end of the night, but it was a good show.=3D20 The melancholy, the angst of not having R&M there is inescapable. It really is all bittersweet now, but to hear Barry live again- perhaps for the last time?- was a precious opportunity. I would agree with many of the prior reviews by members who have seen Barry at other recent shows; relaxed, happy to be doing it and at times emotional. His voice was better than I expected these days. The falsetto in particular. The overall sound of the Sammi turned in some nice renditions of "Chain Reaction" and to my surprise, a low key version of "You Win Again", but I enjoyed both. Her duet with Barry on 'Broken Heart really is a highlight and obviously poignant. As others have suggested, Sammi needs Steve turns in a solid version of "On Time", but again, as others have stated his voice is tough too listen to. The arrangement on "Message to You" is really terrific, but Steve's lead vocals on Robin's verses sort of ruin it. Naturally, there were a numb Beth Cohen has quite a voice. Quite frankly, she overpowered Barry on the "Islands in the Stream" and "Guilty" duets. I thought she was a little over the top, especially on her solo of "Woman in Love" where I thought a somewhat toned down vocal would have All in all a very good concert. I'm certainly glad I went.
