I have always believed that at least part of the reason why they were always undervalued is that they never, in my opinion, managed to figure out how to get publicity from serious music writers and magazines. To name one obvious example, during the whole fever period, instead of capitalizing on their new found cred, they were busy being featured on teen mags. Now, I realize that they might have been trying all these years and not succeeding and that there were "serious" articles, etc... over the years, especially in '97, for example. I also think their reluctance to do interviews where they revealed themselves hurt them. If all an interviewer is going to get is regurgitated pablum, why would they take you seriously? They needed to open up and not be so protective of themselves if they wanted in depth articles by important writers. I am also realizing that their own emphasis on their writing as commercial, not artistic, hurt. If you don't believe you are a serious artist, why would others? If only they have positioned themselves differently, even if they felt the new position was not true, they might have had a different outcome. Of course we will never really know what went on behind the scenes, both with them and the publications and writers they might have wanted to speak to. However, I think there were things they could have done differently, alas; I also think their undereducated, working class background hurt them with this. One interesting thing that I have noted over the years is that from the beginning, not just after Fever, they were pegged as a guilty pleasure, as the "Danielle Steel of music", if you will. But really why could they never get that recognition they so deserved. I mean I think a lot of critics newspaper writers etc.. were damn well afraid to admit just how great the Bee Gees really > > ____________________________________________________________ > FREE 3D EARTH SCREENSAVER - Watch the Earth right on your desktop! > Check it out at http://www.inbox.com/earth > > > > > "Words & Music", Fans Of The Brothers Gibb ( Bee Gees ) > http://www.brothersgibb.com > > To change any of your list options, > please go to website listed above. > End words@brothersgibb.com message digest 05/13/2013 18:01 (#2013-4195)
