Subject: A Breed Apart DVD
Got the German DVD of "A Breed Apart" today. First things first: the disc is definitely PAL format
(although I have a sneaking suspicion that KOCH has done a PAL conversion from an NTSC source) and
the disc is also confirmed Region 2 locked.
Picture quality is from what I can tell (haven't watched it in full yet) decent, it's a "could have
been better, could have been worse" releases. Similarly audio could have been better. Sounds like a
low bit rate Dolby Digital track, a bit tinny and "digital" sounding. From what I can tell this movie
never got a stereo mix and this disc is no exception, apart from the opening and closing MGM logo
fanfare the film itself is presented in it's original mono sound across the left and right channels.
For the average Joe all of that will probably not matter.
English audio is present, German dub is default so one needs to use the disc's menu to set the
English audio before starting the film (using the remote to switch during playback won't work,
neither does skipping the copyright warning, FSK notice and Koch Media logo during start-up unless
you're watching it on a computer).
The one and only extra on the disc is a 2-minute long animated picture gallery which includes
production stills and various promotion material, all of it with Maurice' "Hold Her In Your Hand"
playing throughout (most likely lifted from the film's end credit, the song starts at the same point
and plays in mono).

Yeah, not a particularly good film. Apparently they lost a whole reel of film which they would have
had to edit around, not that that would have necessarily turned it into an Oscar candidate...
I like Rutger Hauer's often quite off-beat characters in his films and he has some moments here.
Donald Pleasence hams it up quite nicely in the brief bits he is in. Other than that this is purely
for the Gibb über-collector.
