Why??? Why a knighthood for Mick Jagger? Not to defend an unrepentant sinner....and he has made a very successful living being Paul McCartney's antithesis - but Jagger has been fairly active in charitable pursuits (it's not likely he wants it widely known!) He does fund raising for the Local Education Trust in Mustique, has worked for the Children's Promise cause, was a contributor at the Robin Hood Concert for New York (and he brought his pals along for good measure), was part of Sir Geldoff's Live Aid initiative(recording Dancing in the Streets with Bowie for the charity), is a Patron of the British Museum and the Centre for Performing Arts in his childhood home of Dartford, has done Prince's Trust work, and furthers the cause of the BBC & Youth Musical Instrument Amnesty. Also, long before it was fashionable, he aided and abetted then wife Bianca in the Nicaraguan Relief effort, with the Stones donating concert proceeds. Heck, he even took part in the Beatles' "All You Need is Love" performance for that famous global broadcast! Not all high profile, many admittedly suggested by someone else, but charity work nonetheless. That, coupled with his undeniable place in rock and roll history is probably enough. And he appears to be a good father - has had lots and lots of practice! How he must be enjoying all this outrage at 58 years of age - still a bad boy, still controversial, still right in your face...and that's a huge part of the WHY! Come to think of it - was charitable donation and/or clean living the basis for the Beatles getting the MBE? Anyone know of the reasoning for that award other that their fame and mop-tops? :) Meta ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jun 2002 14:37:13 +1200 From: "Ann" Subject: Re: Sir Mick!!!!????? Why??? PHEW!!! and he still has time for all his woman!! Right, I hear what you are saying, but if we got down to the real roots of it all, and made lists of what the Bee Gees have supported throughout their lives by way of charitable causes, they would have an even longer list than the Beatles or the Stones, Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney. I am sure it is all a case of those who are in power and have the vote on these things, happen to like at the time. It is not about who has earned the rights, rather, being the "in" person in a political mind. Long Live the Bee Gees. They don't need a Knighthood to be great!! :o)) Ann NZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Meta D" To: "words List Member" Sent: Sunday, June 16, 2002 2:12 PM Subject: Re: Sir Mick!!!!?????
